What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a natural hormone and antioxidant that is produced in the brain, and is also available in supplement form. Melatonin helps relax the mind and body, preparing both for a good night’s rest. Melatonin may also help treat sleep disorders, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome (RLS), and jet lag.

According to research, scientists have determined that melatonin sleep-aid supplements can significantly help individuals fall asleep quickly (increase sleep latency), as well as boost overall sleep duration.(1)

How Does Melatonin Work?

As you get older, your brain doesn’t produce as much melatonin, thus making it difficult for individuals around 55 and older to enjoy a full night’s rest. Melatonin is a potent hormone and antioxidant that protects lipids, proteins, and multiple body systems from free radicals.

Melatonin sleep aid supplements are easily absorbed by the body and immediately begin to protect your brain from neurological issues that may cause future health complications. By restoring proper order in the brain, melatonin is able to assist with your biological clock—signaling when it’s time to rest and when it’s time to wake.

How Long Before I Feel the Effects of Melatonin?

With everything that is a health concern, it’s important to consult your physician. Melatonin sleep aid is a non-addicting hormone supplement that has helped many people receive and enjoy a good night’s rest. Typically melatonin takes around 30 minutes to one hour before you start to feel sleepy. During this time, you should not be operating any heavy machinery. When you take a melatonin sleep aid supplement, you should reside in the safe confines of your home and prepare yourself for bed.
